O Futuro Antigo
o futuro antigo
é filho
de um avô
presente.
O passado
há muito perdido,
cheio de miséria,
arrependimentos,
e causas perdidas,
é o que vai existir,
enquanto o futuro
educa o passado,
e o presente
herda
o futuro.

The Old Future
the old future
is a child
of a grandfather
present.
The long lost
past
full of misery,
regrets,
and lost causes,
is what will exist,
as the future
educate the past,
and the present
inherit
the future.
Leitura do poema
Reading the Poem
“The Old Future” plays with the generations of time, turning future, present, and past into members of one family. The future is a child, the present a grandfather, and the past carries ancient losses. This impossible family tree reveals that times do not live separately: each is born from another and leaves an inheritance within it.
The future educates the past, while the present inherits what has not yet arrived. The apparent paradox expresses a familiar experience: our expectations change how we understand what has happened, and our memories shape what we are able to imagine. The poem bends the line of time until it becomes circular. Within that movement, regrets and lost causes do not disappear, but they may receive new meanings.
