Independentes de Mim
Quem mata a morte?
Quem vive a vida?
Quem continua,
e quem fica?
Sei que nessa dúvida
estou sozinho,
cheio das coisas
que essas perguntas
deixam comigo,
sozinho, sem responder.
Sei que não devo saber,
sei que não sei
o que posso saber,
mas mesmo assim,
as perguntas continuam
independentes de mim.
Independent of Me
Who kills death?
Who lives life?
Who goes on,
and who stays behind?
I know that in this doubt
I am alone,
full of the things
these questions
leave with me,
alone, unanswered.
I know I am not meant to know,
I know I do not know
what I am able to know,
and yet, even so,
the questions go on,
independent of me.
Leitura do poema
Reading the Poem
The poem opens with questions that sound simple but that no one can truly answer: who defeats death, who really lives life, who moves on and who stays behind. The speaker doesn't pretend to have the answers. He accepts the doubt and realizes that, facing it, he is alone, carrying everything these questions leave inside him.
In the end, a humble kind of peace appears: accepting that some things are beyond our knowing. Even so, the questions don't go away; they stay alive, "independent of me." It is an invitation to live alongside mystery without fear, remembering that asking is also a way of being alive.
