A Última Página
Eu alcancei a última página,
flutuando à frente
das minhas expectativas,
como eu a havia colocado
no universo
do conhecimento.
Aquela página existiria,
e ela,
por mais impossível que pareça,
se tornaria a realidade
de um futuro já sido.
The Last Page
I did catch the last page,
floating ahead
of my expectations,
as I had placed it
on the universe
of knowledge.
That page would exist,
and it,
as impossible as it seems,
would become reality
of future been.
Leitura do poema
Reading the Poem
The poem begins with an impossible and delicate gesture: catching the last page while it is still floating ahead of expectation. That page belongs to the universe of knowledge, a place where what we seek seems to exist before we can touch it. To catch it is to find an ending that had continued moving beyond the present.
In the second stanza, possibility and reality exchange places. The page that would exist becomes real precisely because it was imagined, despite its apparent impossibility. The unusual phrase “future been” folds time back upon itself: what is still to come seems already to have happened somewhere within knowledge, waiting only to be caught.
