A Cadeira
Eu me sento, eu fumo, eu penso.
Eu sinto. Eu faço
porque eu quero.
Eu sei.
Eu não sei.
Eu tenho.
Eu não tenho.
Coisas passaram.
Eu tentei, eu olhei, eu vi —
coisas que são boas
porque não são.
Imperfeições
trazendo segurança,
abrigo da tempestade,
do calor do sol,
de fora para dentro —
do que eu penso,
do que eu sinto.
Eu fiz
porque eu sabia
que não tinha
as coisas por vir.
Eu tentei
porque decidi:
coisas que são boas
serão imperfeições,
trazendo segurança,
abrigo,
até, às vezes, amor.
Sempre uma cadeira
onde me sento, fumo, penso.
Eu sinto.
Eu fiz.
The Chair
I sit, I smoke, I think.
I feel. I do it
because I will.
I know.
I don’t.
I have.
I have not.
Things passed.
I tried, I looked, I saw—
things that are good
because they are not.
Imperfections
bringing safety,
shelter from the storm,
from the sun’s heat,
from outside to inside—
from what I think,
from what I feel.
I did it
because I knew
I didn’t have
things to come.
I tried
because I decided:
things that are good
will be imperfections,
bringing safety,
shelter,
even, sometimes, love.
Always a chair
where I sit, I smoke, I think.
I feel.
I did it.
Leitura do poema
Reading the Poem
The chair is where the body becomes still while the mind keeps moving. Between smoke, thought, and feeling, the speaker looks at what has passed and at what has not yet arrived. The short lines create the rhythm of interrupted breathing, as if every certainty carried its own doubt.
Imperfections do not appear as flaws to hide, but as shelter: protection from the storm, the heat, and the world outside. In the end, the chair remains a small territory of safety, reflection, and sometimes love. There, thinking, feeling, and acting become parts of the same gesture.
